Why do I need a spiritual father?
Life is like a labyrinth, especially in your 20s and early 30s: trying to find a spouse, find a career, make enough money, constantly running into T's where you have to decide right or left. A spiritual father is like a cheat code for life. He looks out over everything going on in your life with an amazing, unobstructed view. He knows who you are, where you're trying to go, and he can see the pitfalls of your character: don't do this, because it doesn't coincide with this aspect of yourself.
In your 20s as a man you have hyper impulsivity issues. You say, I'm ready to leave my secure job and go fishing in Alaska, and you're two years out of college and 40,000 dollars in debt, and your spiritual father says: don't do that. It doesn't make any sense. You're derailing the next five years of your life for something you think is temporarily fun and exciting.
The essential criterion is this: your spiritual father has to be somebody you want to emulate, somebody you want to become like. Not his personality; if you're an introvert and he's an extrovert, his guidance is not going to lead you out of your personality. His character. The word character means chiseled into a tablet: it's chiseled into you, and you take it everywhere you go.
Your spiritual father is seeking to endow you with the same character he has. So find a spiritual father you love and respect, whose way of life you want to emulate, because he's going to take you where he's going. He's leading you through the labyrinth to become the type of man that he is. And if he's never worked a corporate job or made any real money, you'll need mentors who can help shape you in those areas, because he may not have all the answers for every aspect of your life.
