How do I know if I'm called to be an Orthodox priest?

You are called when you are being called, and the number one person who should be calling you to the priesthood is your spiritual father. Nobody knows you, your confession, your life, your marriage better than he does. He is the one who should tell you, yes, proceed, or no, pump the brakes, you need more growth and more time in the church. You can certainly bring it up to him: Father, I have this sense about the priesthood.

If he says, my son, I love you, but this is not it, it's a done deal. When I was looking to go to seminary, many people told me I should go, but the opinion I cared about most was my spiritual mother's, because she knew me in the depths of my soul. If she had said no, I would not have questioned it, because I trusted her discernment with the well-being of my soul.

The priesthood, as St John Chrysostom says, is a perilous path. He even says the walls of hell are lined with the vestments of priests and bishops. Knowing that it can cost someone their salvation, you want the person who knows you best giving the answer. That is true Orthodoxy: not trusting in ourselves, but putting our trust in those in authority over us. Flipping to another parish or going to seminary anyways, those are bad decisions.
