Can I be a priest if I don't really like people?

No. If somebody said to me, Father, I love the liturgy, I love the theology, I love the music, but I'm not really big on coffee hour or interacting with people, I would say, do not become a priest. A priest is pouring himself out and being connected to the people. It is carrying their cross. As St Paul says, you rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

You carry their burdens because you love them, because they're your spiritual children, and that love is not your own, it is a supernatural love Christ has given you. Some people are not going to change, or not quickly, and you need to love them through all the seasons of their life. You have to be like Father Gregory in Michigan, who was constantly having people over to his house, opening his door to fellowship, not like the priest I knew who never invited anyone over.

And people have to know that no matter what they do, you will accept them and welcome them back, like the father with the prodigal son. The moment someone turns back, it's as if it never happened. As one of the great saints said, my heart only has an entrance. It does not have an exit.
