Will God really take care of me and my family?

If God is our real father, and I mean this, he has to take care of us, because we are his children. Christ says it in the Gospels: even the pagan fathers take care of their children. How much more so the creator of the entire universe, who holds us and our very existence in the palm of his hand? And he is going to take care of us in whatever way he sees best for the cultivation of our soul.

We may say, well, I need more. Usually we do not need more, we just want more. And I say this with a lot of humility. I have lived in basically abject poverty with my kids at times, in very humble circumstances. And the thing is, God took care of us. He did. Our spiritual health was very good. Our love and our marriage were good. Our love for our children was good.

We had everything that was of real value. We went to church, we received the Holy Eucharist, we loved our children, we loved each other. Everything good that was needed was there. We had maybe one vehicle, or a second car that was not very good, but we got everywhere we needed to go, and we had our health, and things came together. And even if God were to allow our health to deteriorate, because we live in a fallen world, God would still take care of us in another way, according to his measure, as he sees fit for the life we need to have.

That is where this mindset breaks down with people. It is not that they cannot trust God. It is that they want God to be like a vending machine. They want to put their prayers into the vending machine and have it spit out a Porsche or a mansion or a six-figure income, whatever they are looking for, that next thing they think will make them happy. The reality is that the external facets of our life do not make us internally content.

The saints lived on this earth with nothing, many times, and they were full of a peace in their soul that no billionaire could ever experience, because that peace is from knowing God in the Holy Spirit.
