Marriage

Should I love my kids or my spouse more?

So many times today people are devoted to their children, they love their children, and they say, well, I have unconditional love for my kids. But that is not your spouse. Your spouse is the one you have unconditional love for. The spouse is a fundamental aspect of who you are as a person, because the sacrament of marriage takes two people and turns them into one person.

The spouse is the one person you cannot live without. Your children are wonderful, and you should love them unconditionally and be devoted to them, but they need to go and live their own life. They are going to become adults and start their own families. At some point they become your relatives, when they take on their own spouse and have their own kids. But your spouse is forever going to be your family, because that is the person who is a non-negotiable in your life. That is the one person you have committed your whole life to be united with, and truly united.
