Yes. People think they have to cure cancer to have a meaningful job, but everything has been divorced from normalcy. A normal man should have a normal life: a wife and children. If he climbs up on a building every day and repairs roofs, or goes down in the sewer and helps the plumbing, it is meaningful and purposeful, because he is serving someone other than himself.

He serves his neighbor, generates income, and that income serves his wife and his children. When a man puts himself at the center of his own universe, he may acquire tremendous goods and status, but none of it will feed his soul, because his soul was created to know God and to be known by God. We are somebody because we are created by God in his image, because we have a Father in heaven who loves us and is calling us into communion with him. That is what gives life meaning: to love and be loved by God, and to serve the people around us.
