Why does a bad marriage make me so exhausted?
Why do people spend so much time in bitterness and resentment and anger in their marriage, in underlying problems that become a complete and total and utter exhaustion for their souls? If you have one area that is an energy leak in your life, it is a bad marriage. It is a marriage that is not seeing eye to eye, where the communication is not loving and respectful, where the people are not listening to each other, just responding and reacting, bitter, holding on to the past.
A good marriage is energizing for both of you. It propels the two of you forward to do more than you could ever do individually. So why waste a single day in a bitter, unhappy marriage, or even go to bed one night on your anger, knowing that it will compound into the next day, and the next day will be worse than the first, and it can only get worse from there, and it will suck the life out of you.
People are so concerned about their physical health. They want to eat all these healthy foods and exercise. Yet if they have a bad marriage, there is nothing more exhausting to their whole entire being. Your very soul will feel exhausted if your marriage is not going well. Everything inside of you should always be committed to making the marriage the best experience for your partner.
And if both of you are trying to make the best marriage for the other person, you are going to end up with a great marriage. You may not have all the tools. You may be like myself and my wife, who come from very broken homes. You may not have even seen a very good marriage growing up. But the reality is, if you have Christ on your side, and you are devoted to prayer, to communication, to forgiveness and reconciliation and humility, God will bless your marriage and you will stay married. And the number one key to staying married is not getting divorced. God bless.
