Is penal substitutionary atonement heretical?

A lot of Protestants believe that the Father bore his wrath out on the Son. The question becomes: is there now a separation in the Trinity? If one person in the Trinity bears wrath out on another person in the Trinity, there is a division, and the Trinity cannot be divided. So is that a heretical view? Yes, it is a heretical view. But how many Protestants are guilty of that? Tens of millions? That is for God to judge and understand.
