I want to help people. Should that lead me to the priesthood?

Wanting to help people is a worthy endeavor, but some people want to help in the way they think people need to be helped, on the timeline of transformation they have decided. That's not the calling of the priesthood. The priest helps and serves people, but he doesn't heal people. Christ is the healer, and that happens on the timeline of each person's repentance and the work of the Holy Spirit.

There is no one-size-fits-all. Sometimes you may just be helping somebody in a way that keeps them from total destruction. Somebody told me when I became a priest, the goal is to make the bad good, the good better, and the better the best. You have to meet people where they're at, and a priest cannot have an agenda with people. He has to meet every person in the Holy Spirit.

And you can be a helper no matter where you are. Some of the best people I've met in the Orthodox Church are church wardens, treasurers, secretaries, people constantly helping behind the scenes. Many times helping can be done in an even more virtuous way apart from the priesthood, because God sees that they work tirelessly and selflessly without getting any recognition for it.
