I relapsed after months of sobriety - what now?

There's a wonderful saying from the church fathers: to fall is human, to repent is divine. The demons fall all the time, but they never repent. We fall many times in this life. It becomes devastating for people when they accumulate some sobriety, whether from self-abuse, drugs, or alcohol, and then fall. Counting your days of sobriety is a beautiful thing, and I often tell people to do it for motivation and encouragement.

But the most important day of your sobriety is always today, whether you've never been sober or been sober ten years. Even more than that, the most important moment is this exact moment. To repent means to turn: turning from the sin and turning to God, and in every single moment of every day, all we can do is repent. The demons constantly want to trick us into looking at the past, saying, you've been such a failure, you're never going to get better, or into the future, saying, you fell yesterday, so you're doomed to fall again.

But this is not how God works. God works in the ever-present moment, because that is the only place we can find him. We can't find God in yesterday's prayers or tomorrow's prayers, only in the moment we are praying in.
