The Passions

How do you break free from an addiction?

Number one is prayer, specifically the Jesus prayer. This can never be overemphasized. In the first stages, the assault and the coupling, before I get to consent, I want to be in the Jesus prayer, fighting those initial bullets being shot at me. If I don't learn to shut down those thoughts at the get-go, I'm going to end up trickling down the mountainside. If I get into consent, start to plan, and want to follow through, this is where I need to call, this is where I need accountability.

I need people around me who know and understand my struggle, and I need to tell on myself: hey, I'm sober so many days, but I really feel like giving in. Help me out, talk me through it, do something with me, give me an out today. And last but not least, if I end up in the addiction and despair cycle, I need to find a priest, go to confession, and start working very intensely on my spiritual life.

Especially if it's become an addiction with despair, I need to experience the priest's absolution, so I can get out of this, destroy the despair, and understand that God is gracious and merciful to me.
