Do Orthodox Christians worship icons?

It's very simple. If you go to an Orthodox church and see people venerating the icons, you understand very quickly that people are not worshipping the wood. They are showing love and reverence to the person depicted in the icon. This is not an Orthodox phenomenon, it is a human phenomenon. We saw it in American culture during World War II, when people had pictures of their loved ones and would pray for them and kiss those photographs.

For whatever reason, it is intrinsic to being human to show love and reverence to the image of the one depicted. In the case of Christ, the Mother of God, and the saints, we are showing them reverence and love through kissing their image.
