How do I say the Jesus Prayer?
Saying the Jesus Prayer is very simple. I personally prefer the Greek style on Mount Athos, which is simply, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. The number one thing the saints say about the prayer is to pay attention to the words. Give them your focus. This does not mean that as an inquirer you should wake up at one in the morning and pray the Jesus Prayer for three hours.
If you're doing that, you're probably delusional. Talk to your parish priest. But as a norm: driving around in silence saying the Jesus Prayer, totally good. At work in a difficult or tempting situation, say the Jesus Prayer. In a frustrating conversation with somebody close to you, say the Jesus Prayer. The point is that we're using the name of Christ to draw our mind back to him instead of being focused on what's tempting, upsetting, or angering us.
It is simply a way to turn our focus back to Christ and ask for his help and power in the moments that are difficult for us.
