Why do I have imaginary arguments in my head?

This is conversation with the imagination. People get into a disagreement, say with their boss, and they don't like the way it goes. So they replay the conversation in their mind, but they begin to change what they're going to say: if I say this, then he'll say that, then I'll say this. Now all of a sudden we're in imagination land. The boss isn't even there, and you're having a full blown conversation.

People drive home from work having an imaginary conversation with somebody they're agitated with. Then they look out the car window and see a homeless person arguing with a stop sign. They lock their doors, say, that guy is crazy, drive past him, and go right back to talking to their own stop sign. This is insanity. People have imaginary conversations with people who are not even there, and they think it's normal when they do it and abnormal when homeless people do it.

You only want to have conversations with people who are in front of you. If you're imagining a conversation, you are divorced from reality; you are in the fantasy realm, and it does not exist. The conversation will never play itself out the way you think it could. You're way better off to just drop it, pray, make the sign of the cross, and say: that's crazy, I'm not going to go there.
