Is it a bad sign if my life is too peaceful?

The holy fathers tell us that if our life is too peaceful, not our soul but our life, it is a bad sign. It shows the devil is no longer warring against us. The proper state of a Christian is to have spiritual warfare in their life, but in their soul to find peace in the Holy Spirit in the midst of all the tumult, the pestering thoughts, the people who attack us.

In a sense the devil is doing God's will: he presents himself as our adversary so that we draw even closer to Christ, developing our dependence on him, our watchfulness over our thoughts, and the vigilance of prayer, specifically the Jesus Prayer in daily life. It is an impossibility to make spiritual progress without adversity. Adversity is the door that pushes us out of our comfort zone to find peace in the midst of the war.

Those who are unprepared for it leave the church, or they get baptized and find fault with the people around them, or become overwhelmed by the cares of life. It's exactly like the parable of the sower: the thorns choking the seedling, the rough ground without depth of faith. Three types of seed are not saved, only the one that grows deep roots, and Christ doesn't say what percentage of people that is.

So we commit ourselves and understand, as our holy father Joseph the Hesychast said: struggles, temptations, till our last breath. The devil will not cease working against us, and we keep pressing forward into deeper intimacy with Christ.
